A series of scientifically accurate interactive 3D learning games aimed at inspiring the next generation of scientists.
Whilst most teenage gamers are familiar with nanotechnology as a fantastic futuristic technology involving miniature robots, very few have a realistic understanding of nanotechnology, realise its impact on the world, or are genuinely stimulated by its possibilities. Coupled with declining numbers of physics, chemistry and engineering students, this makes cause for concern.
What we did:
NanoMission is a series of scientifically accurate interactive 3D learning games aimed at inspiring the next generation of scientists. Players are challenged in imaginative environments that promote learning about the operation of nanoelectronics, building and functionalising molecules, nanoscale imaging, bottom up self-assembly, and nanomedicine.
The game's plot centres on saving the world from Dr. Neevil's destructive intents and his army of nano-machines. The game's hero (the player), supported by Dr. Goodlove and his assistants, use nano-imaging, create nano-machines, develop nano-materials, and utilise real science to stop Dr. Neevil and save the world.
Modules developed so far include lesson plans and online support. All games and simulations in the NanoMission series are available Free of charge thanks to sponsorship from FEI Company and the Wellcome Trust.
The benefits of Nanomission:
- Encompasses and expands on critical key stages
- Encourages students to learn about science outside the boundaries of the classroom.
- Designed to promote students’ scientific reasoning, foster cooperative learning and intellectual teamwork
- Designed to appeal to and engage a wide variety of learning styles.
